Episode 126 - The Brothers Grimm Halloween Special

What would possibly make Halloween of 2021 more GRIM than a special episode all about the Brothers Grimm? Nothing! That’s why I did it! This is what you’ll get in this episode: A brand new Celluloid Catacombs with Carolyn Mauricette, this time she’s talking all about the 2005 confusion fest of a film starring Matt Damon and Heath Ledger. This edition of The Celluloid Catacombs is brought to you by Wicked Cat Clothing, the world’s finest horror, halloween and paranoral themed clothiers. Next, we’ll take a brief look at the hostory of the Brothers Grimm, then the stories. Oh, the stories. We’re going to talk about a few of the Grimm stories, with commentary by the author of the Webworld Trilogy and San Diego-based filmmaker, Ben Johnson. Ben’s going to tell the basic stories, as he rememberes them and I’ll come in and fill in the GORY details. Finally, I’ll read the full gloriously ghoulish tale “The Robber Bridegroom”. Body parts, wicked murderers and talking birds. Perfect for Halloween! Music of the episode by Murder By Death with their rendition of the Sam The Sham and The Pharaohs classic “Little Red Riding Hood”, plus Austrailian punk rockers Bodyjar with the song “Fairytales”. Brought to you by Wicked Cat Clothing, Sticker Junkie and Midwife Made Naturals. Here are some links!

Episode 107 - The Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark Episode

Have you read any of the “Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark” series of books? As a kid? As an adult? Both? . These books, the Scary Stories series, made a HUGE impression on me when I read them a couple of years ago, as an adult. The artwork is terrifying and amazing. The stories are timeless and creepy, sometimes funny, sometimes disgusting. Always entertaining and fun, that’s the trick of these stories. They grab you and won’t let go. Just like some of the baddies in the stories? Oh, but the art, that’s the REAL kicker, isn’t it? The art in the Scary Stories books worms it’s way into your brain and takes up permanent residence. The original art by Stephen Gammell, that is. Sinister and creepy to the point you feel the art could jump out of the pages and say “YOU HAVE IT!!!”. Here’s what you’ll get in this episode - An in-depth look at Alvin Schwartz and Stephen Gammell. Three stories, one from each book, are dissected and analized. There’s a dramatic retelling of “The Hook”, as it was told to me, when I was a kid in the 1980’s. Then, in the final chapter of the episode, a brief look at the controversy that has plagued this book series for years and years. The Celluloid Catacombs with Carolyn Mauricette pops in to talk about the “Scary Stories…” movie adaption and some fiends of The Bobcast stop by to tell us how the Scary Stories have affected them over the years. Music of the episode by Vudu Sister, who are amazing and will delight you with their spooky sounds. Here are some links!

Episode 88 - Best Of 2020

A “Year In Review” for a year like 2020 was a rough thing to sort out. 2020 sucked. No denying that, right? Well, at least on the Bobcast, 2020 was a great year. Starting out with the conclusion of the Danzig Trilogy and ending with the Paul Tremblay interview, mix in a ton of incredible songs by incredible bands, I can’t complain about 2020 from the podcast point of view. Here’s what you’re getting in this fun-filled episode - Excerpts from the Danzig Series conclusion, the Joe Wood interview, the James Baldwin episode, the Katie Burr interview and the Paul Tremblay interview. A ghost story by Gared O’Donnell of Planes Mistaken For Stars from the very first Bobcast “Ghost Stories” episode. Songs by Lost Avenue, Sarchasm, Le Saboteur, The Bollweevils, Dillinger Four, Get Married and The Hybrids. Sense Field closes this “Best Of…” episode out with a cover of the song “Happy Christmas (War Is Over”. Happy New Year and here’s to a MUCH better year in 2021.

Episode 84 - HP Lovecraft Was A Proud Boy

HP Lovecraft was undoubtedly one of 20th century fiction’s greatest writers. He invented horror fiction as we know it today, I believe. Cosmic, undulating, gasping for breath tales of terror that will keep the bravest soul awake at night. Lovecraft was also an unabashed racist, xenophobe and weird nationalist. This episode covers the history of HP Lovecraft, from birth to death, plus the incredibly lousy views he held on race, immigrants and white power/nationalist nonsense. HP Lovecraft was the early 20th century version of a “proud boy”. Timely, I know. Music of the episode by The Darkest Of The Hillside Thickets, the world’s greatest Lovecraft-inspired band.

Episode 69 - Labor Day Special - The history of Labor Day and more

Happy Labor Day! Ever wonder why we have a Labor Day holiday in the USA and Canada? Wonder no more, here is the answer! I’ll cover the history behind Labor Day, a little of the history of the American Labor Movement and a bit about the rise and fall of Labor Unions in the USA up to current times. Hint - rich folks hate unions, because of course they do. Most rich folks throughout history seem to have issues with the people that made them rich, right? Let me talk to you about that and more in this episode! Songs are by Arthur Bell, Billy Liar, The Drowns and Chixdiggit. Yes, the songs are all about work. Bonus! The story and some thoughts of the folklore hero John Henry are also in this episode. Take it easy, crack open a cold one and let ME do all the work for a little bit. Here are some links!

Episode 63 - Freedom Summer Of 1964 And Voting Rights In The American South

Freedom Summer was a voting rights movement that happened in Mississippi in the summer of 1964. What makes Freedom Summer so important? Freedom Summer really brought the plight of Black Americans to the front of the national conversation at that time. Three men were murdered by the KKK during Freedom Summer, simply because they were helping Black residents of Mississippi attempt to register to vote, among other things. This episode also covers, in a very condenssed way, the history of the rights of Black citizens of the United States to vote, from the end of the Civil War until current times (2020). Voter supression has been an issue for Black Americans for so long and continues to this day. Let’s talk about it, think of ways we can fix this and VOTE the bastards that maintain voter suppression OUT! Music in this episode by Charles Bradley and The BellRays. Here are some links!

Episode 53 - Morrissey Part Two - The Mozpire Strikes Back

Morrissey fascinates me. His music, starting with The Smiths and ending with his latest solo record - “I Am Not A Dog On A Chain” and the person himself. What is it about Morrissey that so many people love and/or love to hate? He’s lovely, controversial, talented, opinionated. The music, though, holy cow. Morrissey’s music has been a huge part of my life ever since the mid-1980’s and the purchase of “Meat Is Murder”. I can’t say how much this man’s music has meant to me over the years. However, in a strange twist of fate, “Bigmouth Strikes Again” is more than just a Smiths song, it seems to be Morrissey’s MO of the last several years. This episode focuses on the Morrissey “solo” years from 1988 up to now. We’ll be taking a fairly deep look at the records and who made them from 1988 to 2004, then a peek at the same from 2006 to the present. The very end covers “Morrissey Vs. the press”, which has been an ongoing thing since 1983 or so. Fun! The songs are by A Wilhelm Scream, The Phenomenauts and J Church and all tie into the subject at hand quite nicely. Here are some links to some great stuff -

Episode 47 - The History Of Tiltwheel Part 8

The year is 2004 and the band is Tiltwheel. Highlights include - Punk Rock Bowling #6 (LASERS AND WATER!!!), a tour of the Pacific Northwest, where a struggle against rednecks and toilets ensue, the Rythym Chicken drops in for a bit and a contest of wills takes place. Or just drinking, it was just a drinking contest against the Chicken. Who do YOU think won? The 4th of July from hell, Fest #3 and lastly, the time Tiltwheel pretended to be Slayer. Episode 45 - The Morrissey Trilogy Part One

What do you know about Morrissey? Singer of sad songs? Supporter of far-right causes? Handsome devil, or just a devil, period? Well, let’s start getting to the bottom of WHO this Morrissey person really is. This very first episode is part of a trilogy of episodes dealing with the wild, sad, wacky and confusing world of The Moz. Misery Mozzery, to his close friends. Does The Moz still have any freinds? We shall see. Three amazing Smiths cover songs grace this episode, as well - “Jeane” by The Slow Death, “Bigmouth…” by Squarecrow and “A Rush And A Push…” by Broadway Calls.
